Fes is deeper and less commercial; Marrakech is easier and more polished. Choose Fes for crafts, history and a medina that still works for locals; Marrakech for food scenes, gardens and day-trip options. On a 10-day trip, do both — the train ride is 6½ hours.

How do you visit the Fes tanneries without being scammed?

Go to Chouara tannery via the leather shops on Derb Chouwara — the terrace view is free or a 10–20 MAD tip, whatever a 'guardian' claims. You don't need a guide to find it; anyone insisting otherwise is selling something.

Can you do Fes in one day?

You can see Bou Inania, the tannery terraces and Talaa Kebira in one packed day, but the medina rewards a second morning when the workshops open and the tour groups haven't arrived.

Is the Fes medina safe to walk alone?
